Nibor One Sting Slim Tobis
Refining the Profile of a Coastal Predator Trigger
In fly fishing, progress rarely comes from dramatic changes.
More often, it comes from paying attention.
Watching how fish react.
Observing what works.
And having the patience to adjust the smallest details until something clicks.
That process has led to the latest development in the Nibor One Sting series:
The Slim Tobis Edition.
Inspired by one of the most important prey species found along Scandinavian coastlines, this new design takes the original Nibor concept in a more streamlined direction while preserving the triggering characteristics that have made the concept successful.
The goal was simple:
Create the most convincing Tobis profile possible while maintaining the unique behaviour that makes sea trout commit aggressively.
Why Tobis?
Few baitfish influence coastal sea trout behaviour as much as Tobis (sandeel).
Long, slender and highly reflective, they spend much of their lives moving between open sand and shallow feeding areas.
Sea trout know them well.
And when Tobis are present, larger fish often become highly selective.
Traditional fly patterns have attempted to imitate Tobis for decades.
Many look realistic.
Some fish well.
But realism alone does not always create reaction.
The challenge has always been finding the balance between appearance and triggering behaviour.
That is where the Slim Tobis project began.
A Narrower Profile
Compared to earlier Nibor One Sting versions, the Slim Tobis features a significantly more refined silhouette.
The body is:
• longer
• slimmer
• more tapered
• designed to closely match the proportions of natural Tobis
The result is a profile that immediately suggests speed, vulnerability and natural movement.
Even at rest, the fly carries the unmistakable shape of a small baitfish.
And sometimes, shape alone is enough to capture a predator’s attention.
The Importance of Flash
One observation has remained consistent throughout the development of the Nibor concept:
Sea trout react strongly to flash.
Not artificial flash.
Not excessive flash.
But the kind of intermittent reflection produced by real baitfish scales.
The Slim Tobis continues this philosophy using metallic silver sides combined with highly reflective green and gold backs.
The finish changes character depending on light conditions.
In bright sunlight it becomes highly visible.
Under overcast skies it remains subtle while still creating enough reflection to attract attention.
The effect closely resembles what anglers often see when a real Tobis turns in shallow water.
A brief flash.
Then nothing.
Then another flash.
Exactly the type of signal predators are programmed to detect.
Built Around Behaviour
As with every Nibor design, appearance is only part of the equation.
The real focus remains behaviour.
How the fly behaves:
• during the cast
• during the pause
• during the retrieve
• during the sink
The Slim Tobis was developed to maintain a natural horizontal attitude while slowly descending through the strike zone.
This has proven especially effective in shallow coastal water where sea trout often inspect prey before committing.
Rather than forcing a fast retrieve, the design encourages anglers to fish slower.
To trust the pause.
To allow the fly to exist naturally in the water.
Because many of the most aggressive takes happen when nothing appears to be happening at all.
Testing Along the Coast
Initial testing has produced encouraging results.
The fly has performed particularly well over:
• clean sand
• mixed sand and eelgrass
• shallow transition zones
• areas where natural Tobis are commonly observed
One of the most noticeable observations has been the confidence shown by following fish.
Instead of short inspections, many sea trout commit quickly and aggressively.
Several fish have attacked directly after the fly entered the water.
Others followed before accelerating and striking during the first pause.
The behaviour is remarkably similar to what was observed during the metallic development phase of the original Nibor One Sting.
Only now with a profile that more closely matches a natural Tobis.
Less Can Be More
One lesson repeatedly confirmed during this project is that complexity does not always create effectiveness.
The Slim Tobis is intentionally simple.
No oversized materials.
No excessive movement.
No unnecessary details.
Just a clean profile, controlled flash and behaviour designed to activate predator instincts.
The fly does not try to imitate every detail of a baitfish.
Instead, it focuses on the details that matter most.
The ones fish appear to react to.
Handcrafted and Continuously Evolving
Every Slim Tobis is individually handcrafted and tested as part of the ongoing Nibor development process.
No design is considered finished.
Every fishing session provides new information.
Every fish teaches something.
And every new version is an opportunity to improve.
The Slim Tobis represents the next step in that journey.
Not a final destination.
Just another evolution driven by observation, curiosity and time spent on the water.
Nibor One Sting Slim Tobis – Prototype Series
The first Slim Tobis prototypes introduce the narrowest and most baitfish-realistic profile in the Nibor range to date.
Combining:
• streamlined Tobis proportions
• metallic silver sides
• reflective green and gold backs
• proven Nibor trigger characteristics
These prototypes will continue to be tested throughout the coastal season as development moves forward.
The fish will decide what comes next.
As they always do.
Final Thought
The longer I fish, the more I believe that successful fly design is not about creating something complicated.
It is about understanding what predators notice.
What they recognise.
And what finally convinces them to attack.
The Slim Tobis was born from that idea.
A simple profile.
A natural flash.
A vulnerable appearance.
Sometimes that is all it takes.
